Punxsutawney Phil's Groundhog Day
The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania has been observing Groundhog Day on February 2nd since 1887, when a newspaper editor declared a groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil the official national weather prophet. According to the tradition, if Phil emerges from his burrow and sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter; if he does not, spring will come early. Phil has an official record of about 40% accuracy, no better than chance, but the ritual draws tens of thousands of visitors to the small Pennsylvania town every year regardless.
