Home of the First U.S. Open
The first U.S. Open tennis tournament, then called the U.S. National Championships, was held at the Newport Casino in Newport, Rhode Island in 1881. Richard Sears won the inaugural men's singles title and went on to win it seven consecutive times. Newport was the social center of the American Gilded Age, and tennis became the sport of choice among the wealthy families who built their famous summer cottages, actually enormous mansions, along Bellevue Avenue. The tournament eventually moved to New York, but Newport remains the home of the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
