The Breakers, a Vanderbilt Palace
The Breakers, the summer cottage of Cornelius Vanderbilt II in Newport, Rhode Island, was completed in 1895 and remains the most spectacular example of Gilded Age architecture in the United States. The 70-room Italian Renaissance-style palazzo sits on 13 acres overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, cost roughly $7 million to build in 1890s dollars, and was used by the Vanderbilt family for only about eight weeks per year. The great hall at its center rises 45 feet, and the house was the first private residence in Newport to have running water and electric lights. Today it is a museum that receives roughly 400,000 visitors per year.
