The 400-Year-Old Angel Oak
The Angel Oak on Johns Island, South Carolina is a Southern live oak estimated to be between 400 and 500 years old, making it one of the oldest living organisms east of the Mississippi River. The tree stands 66 feet tall and its branches spread over 17,000 square feet of ground, with the longest branch extending 187 feet from the trunk. Several of its limbs are so large that they dip down to the ground, root themselves, and rise again before spreading further. The tree survived centuries of hurricanes, floods, and the profound environmental disruption of the colonial and antebellum periods.
