The State That Out-Peaches Georgia
South Carolina actually produces more peaches than Georgia, despite Georgia's famous claim to the title. In most years, South Carolina peach growers harvest between 50 and 100 million pounds of peaches, while Georgia, with its more variable and frost-prone spring weather, produces significantly less. South Carolina has been growing peaches commercially since the 1860s and the Piedmont region of the state, where peaches thrive in the red clay soil, is one of the most productive peach-growing regions in the world.
