Carving Mount Rushmore

The carving of Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills of South Dakota began in 1927 and took 14 years and about 400 workers to complete, using dynamite to remove 90% of the rock before finishing with chisels and drills. The original design by sculptor Gutzon Borglum called for carving the presidents from the waist up, but funding from Congress ran out before the figures could be completed below the necks. The cost was approximately $1 million. Borglum died in March 1941 before the project was officially completed; his son Lincoln supervised the final months of work.
