Deadwood and the Dead Man's Hand
Deadwood, South Dakota was the site of the Black Hills Gold Rush of 1876, which brought thousands of miners into Sioux territory in violation of the Fort Laramie Treaty that had guaranteed the Black Hills to the Lakota people. Wild Bill Hickok was shot in the back of the head while playing poker at Saloon No. 10 in Deadwood on August 2, 1876, holding a hand of two aces and two eights that became known as the dead man's hand. His killer, Jack McCall, was acquitted in a miner's court the following day but arrested again in Yankton and hanged in 1877.
