The Crazy Horse Memorial

The Crazy Horse Memorial being carved into Thunderhead Mountain in the Black Hills near Custer, South Dakota will be the largest sculpture in the world when completed, measuring 563 feet tall and 641 feet long. Work began in 1948 under sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, who was asked by Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear to carve a monument to demonstrate that Native Americans also had great heroes. Ziolkowski worked on the project until his death in 1982, and his family has continued the work since. No federal funding has ever been accepted for the project.
