More Caves Than Any Other State

Tennessee has more caves than any other state in the United States, with over 10,000 documented cave systems ranging from small shelters to massive underground networks. The limestone bedrock underlying much of middle and eastern Tennessee dissolves easily in slightly acidic groundwater, creating caverns over millions of years. Cumberland Caverns, near McMinnville, is one of the largest cave systems in the eastern United States and includes a chamber large enough to hold a concert. It has been hosting underground concerts since the 1970s.
