Where the Transcontinental Railroad Met

The transcontinental railroad was completed at Promontory Summit, Utah on May 10, 1869, when workers for the Union Pacific, building west from Omaha, and the Central Pacific, building east from Sacramento, finally met. A ceremonial golden spike was driven into the ground, and the news was telegraphed instantly across the country. The completion of the railroad reduced the travel time from the East Coast to California from several months by wagon or ship to about seven days. It is widely considered the most transformative infrastructure project in American history.
