The Bonneville Salt Flats Speedway
The Bonneville Salt Flats in northwestern Utah, a remnant of a prehistoric lake called Lake Bonneville that once covered a third of the state, have been the site of land speed record attempts since 1914. The flats provide a perfectly flat, hard surface extending for miles in every direction, ideal for vehicles attempting to travel as fast as possible in a straight line. Ab Jenkins set dozens of long-distance speed records here in the 1930s, and Sir Malcolm Campbell set the first 300 mph land speed record here in 1935. The salt flats continue to host Speedweek every August.
