America's Smallest State Capital

Montpelier, Vermont is the smallest state capital in the United States by population, with roughly 8,000 residents, and is the only state capital in the country that does not have a McDonald's. The city has an active downtown of independent shops, restaurants, and bookstores, and its relatively small size means that the state government has an unusually direct relationship with everyday civic life. Vermont as a whole has the smallest population of any state in New England and one of the smallest in the country, yet it consistently ranks near the top in quality of life, literacy, and civic engagement measures.
