Birthplace of Eight Presidents

Virginia is the birthplace of more U.S. presidents than any other state, with eight born on its soil: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, James K. Polk, and Zachary Taylor. The concentration of presidential birthplaces in Virginia reflects the state's dominant political and economic role in the early republic, when it was the most populous and prosperous state in the country. Virginia's influence on the founding generation was so profound that the first five presidents, and four of the first twelve, were all Virginians.
