70% of America's Apples

Washington state produces approximately 70% of all apples grown in the United States. The combination of volcanic soil, abundant irrigation water from the Columbia and Yakima rivers, low humidity, and warm days with cool nights in the state's central valleys creates conditions considered among the best for apple growing on earth. The industry is so dominant that when a new apple variety succeeds commercially, the entire national supply often comes from Washington. The Cosmic Crisp apple, developed by Washington State University over 20 years of breeding, was released in 2019 and immediately became the fastest-selling new apple variety in American history.
