The New River Gorge Bridge
The New River Gorge Bridge near Fayetteville, West Virginia is the longest steel arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere at 3,030 feet. When it opened in 1977, it cut the commute across the gorge from 45 minutes on winding mountain roads to 45 seconds. Every October on Bridge Day, the bridge is closed to vehicles and opened to pedestrians, BASE jumpers, and rappellers for a single Saturday, drawing up to 80,000 people to one of the strangest and most exhilarating public events in the United States.
