FactMap·Wisconsin

America's Cheese State

Wisconsin produces approximately 25% of all cheese made in the United States, more than any other state, and is home to over 100 artisan cheese varieties unique to the state. The dairy industry arrived with German and Scandinavian immigrants in the mid-1800s, and the conditions in Wisconsin, including the climate, the grasslands, and the work ethic of the settlers, proved ideal for dairy farming. The state has more licensed cheesemakers than any other in the country, and Wisconsin residents consume more cheese per capita than people in any other state, averaging about 40 pounds per person per year.
