The First State to Grant Women the Vote
Wyoming was the first territory in the United States to grant women the right to vote, doing so in December 1869, more than 50 years before the 19th Amendment extended suffrage to women nationwide. The decision was partly pragmatic: the territorial government wanted to attract women settlers and generate publicity. But the women of Wyoming took the right seriously and immediately began serving on juries, which was equally unprecedented. When Congress threatened to deny Wyoming statehood unless it revoked women's suffrage, the territorial legislature reportedly responded that they would remain out of the Union a hundred years rather than come in without women.
