FactMap·Wyoming

America's Least Populous State

Wyoming is the least populous state in the United States, with fewer than 600,000 residents, and has been the least populous state for most of its history. Its entire population is smaller than that of El Paso, Texas. Despite its small population, Wyoming has two U.S. senators, the same as California, a quirk of the constitutional system that gives Wyoming proportionally more Senate representation per resident than any other state. The state's wide open spaces, low taxes, and minimal regulation have made it a popular destination for ranchers, energy companies, and more recently, hedge funds and tech entrepreneurs.
