More Pronghorns Than People
Wyoming has more pronghorn antelope than people. The state's roughly 400,000 pronghorns outnumber its approximately 580,000 human residents, and the pronghorn is one of the most remarkable animals in North America. It is the fastest land animal in the Western Hemisphere and the second fastest in the world after the cheetah, capable of sustaining speeds of 55 miles per hour over long distances. Unlike the cheetah, which is built for short explosive sprints, the pronghorn evolved its speed and endurance to outrun the American cheetah, a now-extinct predator that disappeared about 12,000 years ago. The pronghorn's speed is a ghost adaptation, a capability built for a predator that no longer exists.
